Our Story
Noch Fiernan Farm was founded in 1960 by John and Rita Burke when they moved their seven children from the suburbs of Long Island to the hills of Duanesburg. The original Noch Fiernan (Knockfierna) is a hill located in Ballingary, Ireland where John Burke grew up. The English translation for Knockfierna is "hill of truth" and the legend is that Don Firinne, who was king of the fairies, lived there with the fairy people.
The Burkes originally moved because they wanted to be able to provide organic home grown foods for their family. This they did by having a few cows, chickens and a big vegetable garden. As the years went on, they began to supply customers with pesticide-free veggies and eggs from range fed chickens.
As the children grew, the farm directed its attention towards more commercial potentials. We began with the growing of herbs and expanded into the everlasting flower market and evolved into marketing decorative pieces in the style of colonial, country and Victorian art; hence the opening of the shop in 1979.
Our goal for the shop is centered on individual service to our customers. No request for special orders is too small or large. Everyone receives the same caring and courteous service.
We also have a large selection of perennials that are indigenous to this climate.
We encourage farming by the organic method and have not, ourselves, used chemicals as fertilizer or insecticides since we arrived in 1960. We have found these practices improve the fertility of the soil and therefore our production.
We invite you to visit Noch Fiernan and enjoy a step back to a time where life is a little less hectic and the little moments are more enjoyed. |
